Sighting.—The great advances recently made in accuracyof fire have been rendered possible, to a very great extent, bythe use of telescopic sighting apparatus. Arrangements aremade in all modern sights for the bars or disks which carrythe range graduations to be of considerable length or diameterrespectively, in order that no difficulty may be found inadjusting the sights for every 25 or 50 yds. of r*nge. In thelarger hand-worked mountings, where the laying of the gun forelevation and for direction is effected by two men on oppositesides of the gun, the sights used by them are cross-connected, connected by rods and gearing to one another in such a waythat, initial parallelism of the axes of the two telescopes having NAVAL GUNS] ORDNANCE 235. In practice with the 6-in. and 4-1n. guns, one man is responsiblefor the laying of the gun for direction, and has consequently onlyto think about the coincidence of the vertical cross-wire with thetarget, while another man, who also fires, keeps the gun laidfor elevation, and is
