Royal Air Force in the Middle East, 1944-1945. The entrance of one of the caves used as storage and maintenance workshops by No. 111 Maintenance Unit at Tura-el-Asmant, Egypt. The caves, in the Mokattam hills south of Cairo, were formed by the ancient Egyptians when limestone was quarried there for the casing stones for the pyramids. 111 MU was formed there from a sub-station of 109 MU in August 1941 and, by October 1942, had established aircraft and engine repair, signals repair and general engineering sections within the caves, which also housed Army elements and a small hospital.
