Early in themorning of that day, the vice-chancellor of Oxford, with hisretinue, repaired to the openspace in front of Balliol Col-lege, where this melancholytragedy was to take place;and to prevent any tumultu-ous interruptions from the people, the ground waskept by an armed force under the command of LordWilliams. Every preparation being completed, Lati-mer was brought forth by the mayor and bailiffs, together with Ridley. The contrast exhibited in theappearance of the two sufferers was striking, and ex-cited the liveliest sympathy in the spectators.
