It willnot be doubted that the greater portion of the products of thevalley and western Virginia are destined for consumption in thenorthern States or in Europe. These products would adoptthe most direct line of transit between production and consump-tion, but for the natural obstacles which intervene and condemnthem to the tedious, tortuous and perilous navigation of therivers and coast. The direct line of transit would pass throughthe Chesapeake ports of Eastern Virginia.
