illustration of the ocellated Lizard

Timon lepidus, the Ocellated Lizard (Portuguese: sardão, Spanish: Lagarto ocelado) is also known as Lacerta lepida. However it undisputedly belongs to the family of Lacertidae, the wall lizards. It has been known to live 25 years in captivity. When cornered opens mouth and hisses and may jump towards foe. Males are territorial in spring. Hibernation Oct–Mar or Ocellated Lizard is one of the largest members of its family. It is 30-60 cm (1-2 feet) long and may reach up to 90 cm (3 feet). Two thirds to two fifths of this length is its tail. Newly hatched young are only 4-5 cm excluding tail. Found in various uncultivated and arable habitats from sea level up to 2100 m in southern Spain, potrugal and north africa. Prefers dry bushy areas, open woodland and scrub, old olive groves and vineyards, etc.; sometimes found on more open rocky or sandy areas. Occasionally seen basking on road verges. Usually stays on ground, but climbs well on rocks and even in trees
