TJie cliange ofdirection in the currents is brought about by opening the dampers in <?, which are closed when thecurrents are in the direction of tlie arrows in Fig. 955. The dampers in c do not require to be closed, 954. 7 ,5. except when drawing the finished charges. In working a set of these coke ovens, the severalovens are discharged and recharged alternately in regular rotation, the gases from the ovens inwhich the charges are in their more advanced stages being utilized in heating up in succession theemptied and freshly-charged ovens. With these arrangements the heating up is effected in verymuch less time than in ordinary coke ovens, and also with very much less consumption of thecarbon of the coal; and where convenient or desirable the consumption of the carbon of the coalthat is being coked may be still further reduced, or entirely avoided, by supplementing the gasesin the main gas flue G with combustible gas formed apart from the coke ovens. When a charge COPPEE. 429 in any oven has been thoroughly ignited, and the coking process is in full operation, the dampersin, or controlling, the branch flues of that oven are set so as to cause the gaseous products from itto pass into the gas flue G, or partl
