Wright in 1905 made an extensive study of actinomycosis andadded greatly to our knowledge of it. Naked-eye Appearance of Colonies of Parasite in Tissues.—Inboth man and animals they can be readily seen in the pus from theaffected regions as small, white yellowish or greenish granules of pin-head size (from to 2 mm. in diameter). When pus has not formedthey lie embedded in the granulation tissue. Microscopic Appearance.—Microscopically, these bodies are seento be made up of threads, which radiate from a centre and presentbulbous, club-like terminations (Fig. 149). These club-like termi-nations are characteristic of the actinomyces. They are generallyarranged in pairs, closely crowded together, and are very glistening Fig. 149. A typical club -bearing colony of actinomyces. X 325 diameters. (From Wright.) in appearance. They are more common in bovine than in humanlesions. They have been thought to be reproductive elements, butthey are probably simply a reaction of the filament end to the hosttissue. The threads which compose the central mass of the granulesare from to in diameter: The threads show true branchingand in the older colonies show a segmentation which gives them theappearance of chains of cocci. Sometimes the whole centre of thecolonies seems to be a mass of cocci, some of which may be truecocci from a mixed infection; the clubs are from 6/x to 8/i in threads are stained with the ordinary aniline colors, also byGrams solution; when stained with gentian violet and by Grams MICRO-ORGANISMS BELONGING TO HIGHER BACTERIA. 463 method the threads appear
