An identical pair,known as the Lion gates, wasput up by George I betweenthe colossal stone piers erect-ed by Queen Anne as anentrance to Bushey Park,which so dwarf them thatDefoe speaks of them aspitiful low gates. One otherroyal gate appears in thedesign book surmounted bythe imperial crown and palmbranches (Fig. 18). Thetwo sides differ, and seem-ingly neither were exe-cuted, unless the designswere for the three irongates made for the Queens. FIG. 18. An engraving of the fine gates for Burleigh House near Stamford(Plate vi) is also in the book of designs. They still close the innercourt, and under the shelter of an arch are well preserved. Thesemicircular over-grill bears a large coat of arms,^ the golden garbbetween lion supporters,, surrounded by rich acanthus and mouldedscroll work. It differs little in execution from the engraving and
