Exeter Cathedral, officially known as ‘The Cathedral Church of Saint Peter, was mainly built in the 13th and 14th centuries. This Decorated Gothic cathedral is noted for its solid Norman towers and its West Front which is covered in weathered sculptures. This magnificent and detailed West Front Screen was begun in the 1340’s and took almost a century to complete. It features sculptures of rulers in three well weathered tiers including Alfred, Athelstand, Canute, William the Conqueror and Richard II. Inside it has a stunning nave which can boast of having the longest unbroken Gothic ceiling in the world. The majority of the Cathedral, including the West Front and the Norman towers, is built of local Salcombe stone. It was quarried from several sites around the village of Salcombe Regis, near Sidmouth. From here it was transported by sea to Topsham and then onwards into Exeter by Barge.
