The tenderness of this hit of paintingis simply marvellous; the softness of texture on thewhole hill-side is inexpressibly lovely, and the delicacyof tone lends to it an enchantment which fills eyeand heart with a sense of perfect rest. Repeated onthe smooth surface of the river it is. if possible, stillmore tender and lovely, and hill and reflection formone dream of beauty. Much of its charm is due tothe force of the deep shadows, and their reflections,on the right of the canvas. The painting of trees withthe light behind them is always a powerful featurein Vicat Coles work, and in none of his pictures isit more effective than here. Black-and-white can giveno idea of the truth and variety of tone of thisshadow-painting, still less of the same qualities in hisreflections, but the softness of light and intensity ofshade can be seen well in the plate.
