The contour and size of the open-ing vary greatly by reason of the changeable thickness of its CONDITION OF THE MEMBRANA TYMPANI 373 margins. Where the discharge is profuse small perforationscan hardly be discovered, and their location is recognised onlyby a depression with a pulsating light reflex, or by the appear-ance of pus during condensation of the air in the externalmeatus. Perforations in the anterior inferior quadrant of themembrane are often hidden by the bulging anterior wall of themeatus, and are discovered only by the presence of air-bubblesat the anterior inferior part of the field of vision, brought abouteither by the condensation of the air in the middle ear, or bythe
