Cliff Palace multi-storey Anasazi cliff dwelling, Mesa Verde, Colorado: original timbers protruding from the base of one of the roomblock walls. Tree ring dating shows that building work was in progress at Cliff Palace from AD1209 into the 1270s. Cliff Palace contains 217 rooms & 23 kivas (circular ceremonial chambers); it was home to 200-250 people in the years c AD1200-1300. The structures were well built of shaped sandstone blocks jointed with mud and water mortar and coated with a thin layer of mud plaster. There are storage rooms on an upper ledge, refuse was dumped into the canyon and at the back of the cave. Situated on Chapin Mesa on the SE loop of Ruins Road.
