Bacteria from silage effluent. Coloured scanning electron micrograph of bacteria taken from silage effluent. Rod-shaped (bacillus, pink) and spiral- shaped (spirillum, blue) bacteria appear among organic detritus. These bacteria serve to ferment silage. Silage is an animal food often produced from hay. The hay is preserved in air- tight bags or in a special tower (a silo). Due to bacterial action the hay ferments slowly becoming succulent, and producing organic and amino acids which act as preservatives. Thus this food may be stored into the winter, providing fodder for cattle. Magnification: x2,300 at 5x7cm size.
