Built in 1787 by DavidBuel, this popular and well-known hostelry is today probablythe oldest hotel in point of continuous service now standingin the county if not in the State. Very few country hotelshave entertained so many distinguished men and handsomewomen. As originally built, the whole top floor was a ball-room. This room has had many famous guests honored notonly in Litchfield and Connecticut, but at the nations 1824 the famous ball to Lafayette was given here. Thehostelry was sold to John Phelps, and the house was well -T. PHELPS HOUSE
