Birdseye view of Crowds near the Onofrio Fountain, Dubrovnik Croatia

Onofrio della Cava, built this fountain in 1438. It is the terminus of an aqueduct that funnels water from a source 12 miles away, and routes it into the heart of Dubrovnik. It also presents it in style, with an ornamental mask on each of its 16 sides, serving as spigots. They let the water flow into a collection trough below. As magnificent as this fountain is, it used to be much better. It was heavily damaged in the earthquake of 1667, and some of its ornamentation was never repaired. Centuries later it was still working so well that it supplied Dubrovnik residents with drinking water during the bombing of 1991
