Heroin drug crystals. Polarised light micrograph of crystals of the opioid drug heroin. This drug, also called diamorphine or diacetylmorphine, is synthesised from morphine, a potent analgesic (painkiller) obtained from the opium poppy (Papaver somniferum). Heroin is primarily used as a recreational narcotic and is extremely addictive, forming dependency at an early stage. This is white heroin, a pure form that does not contain adulterants.
