Phycologia britannica, or, A History of British sea-weeds, containing coloured figures, generic and specific characters, synonymes, and descriptions of all the species of algae inhabiting the shores of the British Islands . re has been taken. It obviously differs in many characters, from any Britishspecies, but I am not prepared to say that it agrees with Agardhsplant gathered at Trieste. Of the latter I have seen no speci-men, and form my judgment merely on the short descriptiongiven by Agardh in the Bot. Zeitung, which completelyanswers to our plant. A comparison with authentic specimenswould be very desirable. From Mr. Cress well I have also received another new Calothrix, having many characters in common with , but occur-ring in cushion-like, soft, fastigiate tufts, and with filaments verymuch more slender and hyaline than in that species. This lastI propose to call C. Cressivettii, and to figure in a future numberof this work. Fig. 1. Calothrix pannosa:—the natural size, growing partly on a piece ofrock, partly on Fucus canaliculatus. 2. Part of the stratum:—slightlymagnified, to show the honey-combed surface. 3. Filaments, twisted toge-ther. 4. Portion of a filament:—highly TLate CCCTX. E . Reeve inni. Ser. C/HLOROSPERME E. * Fain. Oscillat Plate SEMIPLENA, Ag. G-EN. Chak. Filaments destitute of a mucous layer, erect, tufted or ag*gregated, fixed at the base, somewhat rigidj not oscillating. Tubecontinuous; endochrome green, densely annulated, at length dis-solved into lenticular sporidia. {Ay.),—from koKos, beau*tiful, and 6pi£, a hair. Calothkix scmiplena; filaments long, slender, tough, ilexuous, denselyinterwoven into lamellated tufts; endochrome glaucous green, fre-quently interrupted, leaving parts of the tube empty. Calotiirix scmiplena, Ag. Bot. Zeit. 1827, No. 40. Calotiirix lamcllata, Marv. in Herb. 1S11! (excl. spec, from Roundstone). Lyngbya semiplena, J. Ag. Alg. Medit. p. 11. Lvxgbya lutesce
