Photograph by David Coleman. The New Mosque, known as Yeni Cami in Turkish, is an iconic Ottoman imperial mosque located in the Eminönü quarter of Istanbul, Turkey. Situated at the southern end of the Galata Bridge, the mosque is a prominent feature of Istanbul's skyline and a significant example of classical Ottoman architecture. Construction began in 1597 under the orders of Safiye Sultan, wife of Sultan Murad III, but was not completed until 1665 due to various political and financial setbacks. The mosque was designed by architect Davud Ağa, a student of the renowned Ottoman architect Mimar Sinan, and later completed by Mustafa Ağa. The New Mosque features a large central dome flanked by semi-domes and numerous smaller domes, creating a cascading effect typical of Ottoman mosque architecture. The interior is adorned with intricate Iznik tiles, featuring floral patterns and calligraphy. The mosque complex includes a courtyard, a royal pavilion, and a covered bazaar known as the Egyptian Bazaar or Spice Bazaar. The prayer hall is notable for its spaciousness and the quality of natural light that filters through its many windows. Located near the bustling waterfront of the Golden Horn, the New Mosque has played a significant role in Istanbul's religious and social life for centuries. Its proximity to major historical sites like the Grand Bazaar and Topkapı Palace makes it a key stop on many tourist itineraries. The mosque continues to serve as an active place of worship while also standing as a testament to the architectural and artistic achievements of the Ottoman Empire.
