This is a real situation. Image not to be used in a defamatory context. MODEL RELEASED. Kidney transplant. Image 3 of 8. Close-up of a donor kidney about to be transplanted into the recipient patient. Kidneys are transplanted to replace a failing or failed kidney. In this case the patient has polycystic kidney disease, one of the most common causes of chronic kidney failure in adults. Kidney transplants have a high success rate, although recipients do need to take immunosuppressant drugs for the rest of their life to prevent rejection. The donor kidney may come from a living or recently deceased donor and can be kept viable outside of the body for several days. For a sequence of images showing a kidney transplant see M575/085 to M575/092.
