In August, 1784, he was ap-pointed Lieutenant-Colonel of infantry under the Confederation. He was made brevetBrigadier-General by resolution of Congress in 1787, and General-in-Chief of the army Sep-tember 29, 1789, which post he held until 1792, when he resigned. He was Adjutant-Gen-eral of Pennsylvania, 1793-99, and died in Philadelphia, August 20,
