The pursuit was vigorously pressed by Thomas, andHoods defeated legions, pouring over the Duck River,and in time obtaining the support of Forrest, who re-joined the army at Columbia, made for the Tennessee,which was crossed on the 27th. The Confederate Armyof the West was completely shattered. In the twodays battles before Nashville, 54 guns and 4460prisoners had been captured by the Union forces, andthe entire loss of the Confederates during the wholecampaign was stated at 13,189 in prisoners alone, in-cluding several general officers, and 1000 others oflower grades. During the same period, more than2000 deserters came into the Northern lines, and 72pieces of artillery passed from the defeated to thevictorious army. The Union loss was about 10,000 inkilled, wounded, and
