Mercury Instructing Cupid

This painting, titled The School of Love, shows the Roman messenger god, Mercury (Greek Hermes), with the god of love, Cupid (Greek Eros), and Cupid's mother, Venus (Greek Aphrodite), the goddess of love and beauty. It dates to about 1525. The painting is by the Italian baroque painter Correggio (1494-1534). Correggio influenced Italian art with his bold use of foreshortening and soft moving contrasts in color, light, and shade. It now hangs in London' s National Gallery.
