. Report of the director . fit to all growers, both amateur and pro-fessional. Stable manure and ground bone have always been thestandard recommendations for flowers, but manure is no longeravailable, and there is no adequate knowledge of the fertilizerrequirements of ornamentals. Inventory of Connecticut Soils Although a detailed soil map of the entire state has not yetbeen completed because of lack of funds and an adequate base map,the last year has seen material progress. In cooperation with theStorrs experiment station, soil maps have been made of 2,500 Report of the Director A77 farms located in 13 towns of eastern Connecticut. With thisinformation and that accumulated in previous years, a fairlyaccurate soil map of each of these 13 towns has been made. Theimmediate objective is to provide a basis for classifying farmsinto types as a part of the studies in agricultural economics, but atthe same time we are adding to our knowledge of the distributionof the soil types already known to exist within the Figure 40. Good growth and flower production of dahlia given completefertilizer treatment. Lysimeters Show Top-dressing Necessary A top-dressing of nitrogen applied after heavy rains in Mayand June showed marked benefit to spinach, onions, carrots, andbeets planted on the experiment field in Windsor. Serious croplosses are frequently experienced through the leaching of the 478 Connecticut Experiment Station Bulletin 337 available forms of nitrogen from the soil, particularly with early,shallow-rooted vegetables on sandy soils in the wet weather ofspring and early summer. In the last three years the lysimeter at Windsor has given val-uable information on leaching. Records taken this year showedthat practically half of the rainfall in May and June washedthrough the surface soil and carried away almost all of the nitratenitrogen. The lysimeter, which is built partly underground, with tubesthat lead from tanks of soil treated with various fertilizer applica-tion
