While an investigation was beingmade as to the cause instructions were given to themotormen to operate these cars with the controllers inseries position only. This operation proved unsatis-factory, as the men found they could not make the de-sired schedule speed. Investigation and tests showed that whenever an in-terurban car came into the section its large demandsfor current caused heavy voltage surges on the line, and that the flashing over of the motors on the citycars resulted from these voltage surges. As increasedcapacity for this section could not be provided at once,it was decided to resort to the temporary expedient ofconnecting resistance in the trolley circuit of the citycars ahead of the controller. This resistance was madeof sufficient capacity so that it would carry the carcurrent continuously without overheating. This rem-edied the trouble of flashing over of the motors, but ofcourse the operation was somewhat inefficient. Wheel Tread. Worn Wheel Causes Bond Trouble THE operation of a car with a defective wheel re-cently resulted in an illuminating but sad ex-perience for a prominent railway company which oper-ates a number of city, suburban and interurban rails of one of the interurban lines were rebondednot long ago with laminated bonds soldered to the railheads. The line is a double-track one and is laid with , 60-lb. T-rails 60 ft. in length. It extendssome 25 miles into thecountry, passingthrough several smalltowns. About one-half of the track is ofopen - type construc-tion, the balance be-ing on paved after the re-bonding was c o m -pleted, track men no-ticed that practically all of the bonds on the open trackwere either lying along the track or had been partiallyloosened. After some little investigation the cause wasdiscovered as a wheel which was worn grooved, as in-dicated in the accompanying sketch. A combinationof soft wheel tread and defective brakes
