George Stephenson, English inventor, born Wylam, Northumberland in 1781 & died in Chesterfield, Derbyshire in 1848. Stephenson was the principal inventor of the steam railway locamotive. His first locomotive, the Blucher, travelling at 4mph was used for pulling coal wagons at Killingworth colliery. The first passenger train service, the Stockton Darlington line, opened on 27th September 1825, carrying 450 persons at 15mph. Stephenson also invented a miner's safety lamp at about the same time as Davy (1815).
