After measuring a big Veracruz Mexico tarpon’s length and girth, a PAT (Pop-up Archival Transmitting) tag is placed near the fish's dorsal fin. Special state of the art satellite-based Pop-up Archival Transmitting (PAT) tags are used to obtain the information researchers seek. The $6,000-each tags transmit water temperature data, location and depth of the fish’s movement and even light levels where the fish is swimming. The data provides scientists like Dr. Ault valuable info that can be used to thoroughly develop knowledge of the tarpon’s behavior.
