A steel elephant sculpture is a sign directing pedestrians to the town centre from Colchester North rail station, Essex, England

A sign in the form of a steel elephant sculpture sited on the south-side forecourt, Colchester North railway station. To help make walking the one-mile route into the town centre from the railway station more appealing, elephant signs have been installed in 2016. The new wayfinding device has created a welcoming first impression of Colchester, Essex, England, UK – plus improve the identity at the station. Yellow banners guide the walker to the two similar elephants on the town centre’s High Street. The sculptures were inspired by Emperor Claudius, who made a journey in the area in AD43 when he arrived in Colchester with an invasion force that included elephants – details of this event are described in a plate inset into the ground at the base of the sign. The designers Dallas Pierce Quintero created the signs under the banner ‘Fixing the Link’. The elephants are made of weathering steel, giving them a aged, rusted look and are lit with low-energy LED uplighters at night.
