The Spiral Fresco itself, the painted stucco reliefs and the column baseswhich found their way into this basement, evidently belonged to a chamber ofexceptional size and importance, in which, as shown below, we must recognizea o-reat East Hall of the Palace, afterwards, it would appear, to be restoredin a Late Minoan guise. These remains were found irregularly disposed ina layer about 70 cm. thick, beginning about a metre-below a later clay andplaster floor, on which rested plain tripod-pots of the usual M. M. M. Ill stage.,- It seems to have been thrown into the place in which it lay at the time when the clay floor above was made.^ • It has been already noted - that two column bases came to light in thisdeposit cut out of a black breccia with bright orange-red veins shot withcrystalline white and identicalwith that still obtained from the quarries ofthe neighbouring Kakon Oros (Fig. 268). Both the high form of these bases and their polychrome material arecharacteristic of the Earlier Middle Minoan architectural style and it ispossible that these, together with another found in position in the EastPortico near by, may have been taken over from the ea
