Private Grady Penington Private Penington enlisted in the army on June 1, 1940, at Fort Moultrie,S. C. His enrollment was in the regular army. After his preliminary trainingin this country he was transferred to the Hawaiian Islands, and he was therewhen the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. According to his statements, Pvt. Penington saw much action in the SouthPacific. He participated in some of the bitterest engagements of the Solomons,the Gilbert, the Mariannas, and Saipan. He has been awarded four stars, re-cognizing his participation in four major engagements. Pvt. Penington explain-ed that at no time did he ever try to shirk his responsibility or seek to avoid anengagement. He stated that he was the proudest of the Good Conduct Medal,which represents good behavior in the army for a period of one year. He re-ceived only one minor wound, when a bullet which was almost spent pierced hisleg a little way. 12 THE UPLIFT
