Ruined church Alresford Essex

's Church at Alresford, near Colchester, in Essex is an example of a modern ruin, having been destroyed by fire in 1971. The Church of England took the difficult decision not to rebuild it as it is situated a long way from the modern village - having been built for the convenience of the lord of the manor and not the villagers. The church noticeboard says it was built 'circa 1320' but this appears to be in error as the adjoining Essex County Council history board tells a different story. This says the building dates from the 12th century with additions in the 13th and 14th centuries and a final 'modernisation' in the 19th century. All this was revealed after the disastrous fire when internal plaster and external cement render was taken off to reveal the phases of building. For example the original 12th century building was shorter and narrower but this was expanded in the later centuries and an original round Norman window was blocked in.
