When Lincolniieede4 a new yoke for his ox team, he made it himself. No university canclaim that it ever gave Lincoln adegree, but the University of Illi-nois is proud of that ox-yoke whichLincoln made. What a grand lessonthat ox-yoke teaches to all of us whoare willing to learn! Ox teams are still used in the backdistricts in many parts of this coun-try, as well as other countries. Thereis nothing quite equal to a steady oldox team for pulling you out of thehole—and its a hole this country isnow in. Drivers of oxen control themby simply talking to them. They knowbetter than to beat their oxen; theyuse gentle words, and coax them todo their best. And that again is what we all needright now. Theres a lot of good stuff. Ox-yoke made by Abraham Lincoln^ in thecollection of the University of Illinois. in us, but we need encouraging words;we have kicked against the pricks fartoo long. An ox team gives a strong, steadypull; they throw their weight intothe yoke, and along comes the wont do it. Some people, who dont know ox nature (or humannature) think that this country canbe yanked out of the hole by a seriesof jerks. Not so. Steady all! Its a long pull and astrong pull and a pull all together! The load is moving—but we must allkeep pushing. If you catch any ofthose big-bugs riding, knock em olT!This is no time for anybody to ride—if there ever was such a time. U. S. DEPIHTMENT OP AGRICULTUEBWashington, D. C.
