Tanzania. Shaded relief satellite image covering an area 223 x 223 kilometres. Colour coding represents topographic height. Lowest areas are green, rising through yellow and tan, with white the highest. North is at top. The central crater (caldera) of the extinct volcano Ngorongoro (large circular area, centre right) is surrounded by a number of smaller volcanoes, all associated with the Great Rift Valley. South of the crater are Lake Eyasi (left) and Lake Manyara (right). The relatively smooth region (upper left) is the Serengeti National Park. Near the centre of the image is Olduvai Gorge, where remains of the earliest humans to exist were found. Image taken in 2000, by the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) on board the Space Shuttle Endeavour.
