In 1813 there was a small stock-ade on the lake shore just below it, for Clevelandwas a depot for supplies, and was waiting to give awarm reception to the English. Most of the publicbuildings are on or near the square—the Post Of-fice, Custom House, City Hall, and several of thechurches. Not far away is the library of the YoungMens Literary Association, which has had a sin-gularly favored career. Established in 1845 upon avery unpretentious basis in the Case Building, it wassoon given a perpetual lease by the owner, and laterreceived a large sum of money for its extension andsupport from a son of Mr. Case. Euclid avenue, which from its rustic poi)nlarity inpioneer days, came to bear the proud distinction ofbeing one of the handsomest streets in the world,stretches off eastward from the square, for four and ahalf miles, until it reaches Wade Park, a beautifulspot, still shaded by the groves and forests which iiavebeen left from the wilderness.
