Black and White Illustration; Drawing of the cross found in St Cuthbert's Coffin
Black and white illustration which was published in "Our Own Country: Descriptive, Historical, Pictorial" Volume II by Peter Cassell, Galpin & Co. It was started as a periodical in 1878, its chief contributor being Professor Thomas George Bonney, and brought together in bound volumes in about 1880. It went through many editions, finally being superseded by "The British Isles" in 1904, an entirely new work much illustrated with the new medium of photographs rather than engravings. It is said that in writing the works Professor Bonney derived a "pleasant relief" from his more exacting work as a scientist.
