The Galerie Vivienne was built in 1823. Here the passerby can find chick and expensive boutiques. It is one of the most beautiful and iconic passages and witnessed the opening of Jean-Paul Gaultier first boutique. It offers great views of its spectacular arcades, mosaics and sculptures. Parisian covered passages were built between the late 18th century and the mid-19th century in order to house shops and restaurants. These arcades covered with glass roofs connecting two streets were an architectural innovation at that time. From the 150 galleries that existed in 1850 only 20 remain nowadays. Each passage has its own special character and they have become a typical Parisian feature.
