Sunspot observations made in 1770. Here, the four main drawings show sunspots (dark areas) on the solar disc at various points in 1770: January (upper left); May (upper right); June (lower left); and August (lower right). The diagram at bottom right shows the position of a sunspot relative to the Sun's equator. Sunspots, first observed with telescopes in 1610, are areas of magnetic activity that are cooler than the rest of the Sun's surface. These observations were published in volume 64 of Philosophical Transactions, the journal of the Royal Society in London, England.
