When the ground freezes in the early wititer, cover the entire bed with salt meadow hay to the def)th of 1 or 2 inches. If this cannot be had, use straw, which is improved by being cut; corn- stalks, long manure, leaves, shavings, or other material that will not pack and smother the plant, will answer the purpose. In the early spring remove part of the covering, and place as much as possible under the foliage of the plants to keep the fruit clean and the weeds from growing.
