Tree wasp nest in the apex of a blocked C13th doorway in the S wall of the nave of St Mary's Church, Stoke D'Abernon, Surrey, England, UK. Dolichovespula sylvestris likes to make its nest in enclosed places such as hollow trees, wall cavities, lofts, under eaves and arches, and sometimes underground. The wasps' distinctive nest is made from a pulp of digested wood, usually dead bark but also garden furniture & sawn planks etc. The south wall of the nave is the oldest surviving part of the church, dating back to pre-Conquest times, possibly as early as around AD 700. It is built of large flints with infills of red brick taken from the ruins of a local Roman villa. This entrance was used until the present porch to the W (L) was built in 1866.
