This colourful statue of King George III was erected in 1809, in the seaside resort of Weymouth, to celebrate his Golden Jubilee. Dorset, England, UK.

The inscription written on the massive stone plinth upon which this vivid statue stands reads: “The grateful Inhabitants To George The Third On His entering the 50th Year Of His REIGN.” The coastal town of Weymouth was much enjoyed by King George III who took holidays there on fourteen separate occasions, the first in1789. The King was originally advised to travel to Weymouth for health reason. It was thought that exposure to the fresh sea air might bring relief from the serious physical and mental illness from which he suffered. With his patronage the King changed the fortunes of Weymouth and it soon became a highly fashionable seaside resort. It was decided that the town should raise a statue in tribute to the King and it was duly erected in 1809 to celebrate his golden Jubilee. The statue is made of Coade stone and it was originally painted a bronze colour. It only became vividly multi-coloured in 1948.
