Riordan Central Library, headquarters for the Los Angeles Public Library system in Los Angeles, California, USA. A symbolic sun appears on all four sides of the pyramid, which is crowned by a hand holding a torch to represent "The Light of Learning." Sculptures decorate the inner corners of the tower's parapet alongside names of famous men of letters, including Plato and Dante. Architect Bertram Goodhue designed the landmark Art Deco building, which opened in 1926.
