Themother died August lt>, 1876. Our subject was the ninth of afamily of twelve children, five ofwhom are now living. He waseducated in a log school house inHoward county, where they usedsplit logs hewn smoothe for scats,and was reared on a farm wherehe remained till the gold fever. PORTRAIT AND BIOGRAPHICAL RECORD. 213 broke out in California in 1840, when he wended his way acrossthe broad western phiins between Missouri and his destination, with acaravan made up of citizens from his section of the country. He re-mained there until 1851 when he started on his homeward journey toChariton county. In he returned to California and remained un-til 1853. He then came back to this county and on March 8, 1854,was married to Miss Amanda J. Addis, daughter of Geo. and SusanAddis, of Chariton county. The fruits of this marriao^e was six chil-dren—tive boys and one o^irl—three of whom, N. R , C. C. and are still livino^ a few miles southwest of Salisbury, where our sub-ject had purchased 200 acres of land in 1854. Mrs Wrio^ht died June25, 1894, which loss was sadly mourned l)y a loving family. Our subject was elected township collector in 1874, and to theoltice of assessor, when he took the census.
