When completed this cut-off will allowthe freight trains to be taken off the portion of the systemof the Oregon Electric Railway where traffic is most Oregon Electric Railway—Treating Poles with Preservative This cut-off is being constructed on a grade of five-tenthsof 1 per cent. All new main line of the Oregon ElectricRailway is constructed with a maximum of four-tenths of1 per cent grade and a 3 deg. curve, as the company antici-pates a large freight business and wishes to be able totake care of it economically. The company is also double-tracking its line between MATERIAL YARD The engraving on page 1050 shows the material yard ofthe company near Salem. The tracks in this yard are laidin a series of arcs of circles with considerable space be-tween them. The practice of unloading material in thisyard is as follows: As the material is brought to the yardsit is unloaded by crane on to the ground directly adjoiningand on one side of the track.
