Sporophyte 1—2 cm. high ; seta red when young, red-brown when old, more or less roughened with rather low distinct papillae, nearly smooth below; cup^ule red-brown, mni-, 3: i, unsymmetric and inclined; operculum long-conic, apiculate ; annulus narrow, usually adher- ing to the operculum ; cilia i or 2, long, nodose and papillose- toughened ; spores roughened, i^fi, maturing in autumn. Type locality European. On damp earth and stones, in woods and in damp grassy places. Apparently the range of B. salcbrosiun.
