A little morethan a year ago a water-softening plant was installedwhich reduces the scale-forming material to about threegrains per gallon. This is a continuous-process watersoftener manufactured by the William Graver TankWorks, East Chicago, 111. The cost of operation of thewater softener is about $40 per month, and its use hasalmost eliminated boiler cleaning. An extra supply ofsoftened water is stored in a large wooden tank whichformerly was used for engine water when steam loco-motives were operated.
