He conducted several Jour-nals; was one of the principal authors ofthe Universal Biography; wrote Eulogieson Boileau and Corneille; and edited and AUG SI commented upon a variety of AUGEREAU, Peter FrancisCharles, marshal of France, duke ofCastiglione, was born at Paris, in 1757,entered the army early, served in theFrench and Neapolitan ranks, became afencing master at Naples, returned toFrance in 1792, distinguished himself, asbrigadier general, against the Spaniards,was sent into Italy, as general of division,and acquired high reputation under Bona-parte, especially at Castiglione and Ar-cole. After having, between 1797 and1804, filled several high commands, hewas raised, in the latter year, to the rankof marshal. In the campaigns of 1805,1806, 1807, 1809, 1812, and 1813, he borean active part, and enhanced his reputa-tion; but his conduct in 1814, when hewas entrusted with the defence of the de-partments between the Rhone and theAlps, was severely criticised. He waseven suspected of having betrayed histrust; and this suspicion was not weaken-ed by his
