A text-book on diseases of the ear, nose and throat . he posterior crico-arytenoidmuscle arises from the broad de-pression on each side of the me-dian line of the posterior surface of the arytenoid cartilage, and its con-verging fibres i^ass upward and outward, being inserted into the outerangle of the base of the arjtenoid cartilage behind the attachment of thelateral muscle of the same (Fig. 234). The outer or more horizontalfibres of the former tend to draw each cartilage from its fellow, whilethe inner or lower fibres rotate it on its base, the outer angles of thecartilages being rotated backward and outward, thus throwing directlj^outward the anterior or vocal processes to which are attached the vocalcords. The rima giottidis is thus widened. The lateral crico-arytenoid runs along the upi)er sloping border of thecricoid cartilage, the origin extending along this border as far back as thearticular surface for the arytenoid. It is thus concealed in great measureby the ala of the thyroid. Its fibres pass up and back to be inserted into. This action of this muscle is torotate the arytenoid cartilage so as to bring its vocal process towards themedian line, thus narrowing the rima giottidis. It should be borne in mind that the movement of the cricoid on the Fig. 232. Fig. 233.
