Coronation of Catherine the Great
Catherine the Great (1729-1796) was born Princess Sophie of Anhalt Zerbst in Prussia. She married the future Peter IIII of Russia in 1744, and, in 1762, with a group of conspirators, deposed Peter and proclaimed herself empress of Russia. This illustration, dating to 1906, shows the coronation of Catherine II, better known as Catherine the Great, in 1762.
