James Russell Lowell, Phillips Brooks, Oliver Wendell Holmes, , Francis Adams. Jr., Edward Everett Hale. President Elliott, of Harvard,and the two leading members of the bar of New York City to-day. Joseph and James C. Carter, are all from this chapter. The Yale Chapter is not far behind Harvard, and the smaller collegeshave done their share. In the field of literature may be mentioned the names of Donald , Hamilton W. Mabie and George William Curtis, and in theology thenames of Bishops Coxe and Huntington of the Episcopal Church, and Dr,Storrs, of Brooklyn. 142. WILLIAM WILLIAMS KEEN Probably the fraternitys most conspicuous strength at the present tinaeis in the line of education. It numbers in its rank to-day the presidents ofYale. Harvard, Johns Hopkins, Clark, Amherst, Northwestern, Union. Andover,Smith and Vassar. In public life Senator Allison, of Iowa, is its most prominent representa-tive, and at the time of the death of the late Justice Blatchford, of the UnitedStates Supreme Court, one-third of the nine members of that body were mem-bers of this Fraternity, the other two being Justices Shiras and Brown. In diplomacy Alpha Delta Phi has been represented by ministers toEngland, Germany. France, Russia. Spain, Turkey, Holland, Austria, Greeceand Belgium. The most recent of these appointments were under the Cleve-land administration—Mr. Uhl, at Berlin, and Mr. Quimby, at The Hague—bothbeing graduates of the chapter at the University of Michigan.
