Lines were tobe constructed from Cairo to Galena, from Altonto Mount Carmel, from Peoria to Warsaw, fromAlton to the Central Railroad, from Bellevilleto Mount Carmel, from Bloomington to Mack-inaw Town, and from Meredosia to experiment proved extremely unfortunateto the financial interests of the State, and laid thefoundation of an immense debt under which itstaggered for many years. The Northern CrossRailroad, extending from Meredosia to Spring-field, was the only one so far completed as to be inoperation. It was sold, in 1847, to Nicholas , of Springfield for §21,100, he being thehighest bidder
