A teacher demonstrates to his secondary school physics class how static electricity can be used to light up a neon light bulb. The silver dome is the top of a small Van de Graaff generator. An endless insulating belt runs from the base of the generator to a pulley within the dome. Electrical charge is sprayed onto the belt at the bottom and is collected by a row of needles within the dome. The charge on the dome builds up and can then be discharged through a bulb, making it light up.
